Travel guide

If you are a first-time visitor to Bulgaria, you might not know that there are a variety of ways to travel from Central and Eastern Europe to Sofia. In order to make your best choice, we have compiled a list with some of the easiest options to reach our capital:

By plane

Depending on your starting point, you can fly to one of our three major airports:

Sofia Airport ( )

Sofia Airport ( SOF) is the main airport serving our capital city. It is located 10 km ( 6 miles) east of Sofia. There are two passenger terminals – T1 and T2, which are 3 km (2 miles) apart. A free shuttle service takes passengers between the two terminals every 30 minutes from 7 AM to 7 PM each day. Taxis are also a relatively cheap option.

How to reach the city center?

  • Subway: Тhe city center is directly connected to the airport’s Terminal 2 via the extension of Sofia Metro Line 1 (Journey time: 18-20 minutes). You will find the metro station at Sofia Airport in the eastern part of Terminal 2 (Ticket price: 1,60 BGN).
  • Taxi: As a foreigner in Bulgaria, we do recommend you to book a taxi in advance. Most of the big companies have a desk in the arrivals hall at both Terminals. Keep in mind, that the metered fare to central Sofia is somewhere between 10-13 BGN. We strongly recommend that you check if the meter is running every once in a while during the drive. For further information , please check:
  • Shuttle bus: Shuttle buses are one of the most convenient travel options. Luckily, the majority of the bigger hotels in Sofia provide transport from/to Sofia Airport.

Burgas Airport ( )

It is located in South-Eastern Bulgaria, near the Black Sea Coast. Burgas Airport ( BOJ) provides one of the two scheduled domestic flight-connections within Bulgaria ( Sofia – Burgas and Sofia- Varna). Both routes are operated by Bulgaria Air ( The flight  duration is 40 min. /For more information on the prices and flight options, please check the official website of Bulgaria Air/

Plovdiv Airport (

Another great option is the airport in the European capital of culture  – Plovdiv. The city is located in South-Central Bulgaria and is 148 km away from Sofia. There are no flight-connections between the two airports. However, you can easily take a bus or rent a car and reach the capital in under 1h and 30 minutes.

 By bus

If you are traveling from a neighboring country –  Greece, Macedonia or Serbia – you might fancy taking one of the direct buses (Skopje-Sofia; Belgrade-Sofia or Athens-Sofia). In this case , please check the website of the Bulgarian central bus station ( )  where you can find more information on the timetable and the prices of the bus-connections to Sofia).
